Breeding information
Rottweiler pregnancy is a significant commitment that lasts about 63 days (typically ranging from 58 to 68 days). Given the breed's size and powerful build, managing a pregnancy requires careful attention to nutrition and health to avoid complications like eclampsia or difficult births.
1. Timeline & Milestones
A dog's pregnancy is divided into three trimesters, each roughly 21 days long.
Weeks 1–3 (Early Stage): You likely won't see physical changes. Some females experience "morning sickness," minor vomiting, or a temporary loss of appetite around week 3.
Weeks 4–6 (Mid-Stage): The belly begins to noticeably expand. Nipples become larger and darker. A veterinarian can confirm pregnancy via ultrasound (around day 25) or blood tests (relaxin hormone test).
Weeks 7–9 (Late Stage): Movement of puppies can often be felt or seen. The mother will begin "nesting" (shredding blankets, looking for a secluded spot). An X-ray around day 45–50 is highly recommended to get an accurate puppy count.
2. Litter Size
Rottweilers are known for having larger-than-average litters.
Average: 6 to 12 puppies.
High End: It is not uncommon for healthy Rottweilers to have up to 15 puppies.
First-timers: A young mother's first litter may be significantly smaller, sometimes just 2 or 3 pups.
3. Nutrition and Care
The "Puppy Food" Switch: Around week 5 or 6, gradually transition the mother to a high-quality puppy formula or a performance-based food. It contains the higher calcium, phosphorus, and protein levels needed for bone development in the fetuses.
Feeding Frequency: In the final weeks, the growing puppies will press against her stomach. Switch from two large meals to 4–5 small meals a day so she can digest them comfortably.
Exercise: Maintain gentle daily walks. Avoid high-impact jumping or protection training/rough play during the second half of the pregnancy.
4. Signs Labor is Starting
The most reliable way to predict birth is to track her rectal temperature.
Check it twice daily starting around day 58.
A normal temperature is 38°C–39°C.
When it drops below 37.2°C, labor will typically begin within 12 to 24 hours.
